A View from the Class Zulpha Styer MPA 20 COLUMBIA UNIVERSITY - SIPA Admissions Blog The SIPA  Office of Alumni and Development  is pleased to share  A View from the Class, a SIPA stories series featuring current SIPA students. Hi, I am Zulpha Styer, a second-year  Master of Public Administration  candidate, concentrating in  Urban and Social Policy  with a specialization in  Management. This year, I’m excited to be participating in the  International Fellows Program. I’m also a Global Public Policy Network Sustainable Development Goals Fellow and honored to be a recipient of the General Sir John Monash Foundation scholarship, Australia’s most prestigious scholarship for graduate study overseas. What were you doing prior to attending SIPA? I graduated from the University of New South Wales in Sydney in 2013 with a combined Bachelor of Laws and Bachelor of Arts in Politics and International Relations, and Development Studies. For almost six years, I served as a senior policy advisor to the Australian government at the federal and state levels, including as a legal officer on the Countering Violent Extremism (CVE) team in the Australian Attorney-General’s Department and as a policy officer in CVE and indigenous policy with the Department of Premier and Cabinet. While working, I completed a Graduate Diploma in Legal Practice and a Master of Laws with Merit from the Australian National University, and was admitted as a solicitor to the Supreme Court of the Australian Capital Territory. I was also appointed to the Multicultural NSW Regional Advisory Council for South West Sydney, advising the Minister for Multiculturalism on one of the state’s most culturally diverse areas. Why did you choose SIPA? I wanted a school with international credibility and renown without a college town experience. It was very important for me to continue to live in a city and be embedded in a community that was more than university students. I also valued SIPA’s much larger international cohort, and the opportunities for practical engagement through capstone projects and practitioner-led courses. How has your experience at SIPA been so far? My time at SIPA has been full of incredible experiences in the classroom, in New York City, and abroad. This past summer, I interned with Internews at their Regional Headquarters for Asia. Internews is an international non-profit that supports local communities to participate and make more informed decisions by producing, disseminating, and promoting high quality and trustworthy news. This internship was the fieldwork component of the Applied Peacebuilding and Conflict Resolution course I completed in the spring with  Professor Zachary Metz. My specific role focused on projects on peaceful pluralism, religious freedom, and violent extremism in Asia, particularly in Sri Lanka and Myanmar. What are you looking forward to studying this semester? This semester, I’m the Teaching Assistant for  Professor Horst Fischer’s  International Law course, and I’m excited to also be taking a course through the law school which studies Post-9/11, the Trump Administration, and the Rights of Non-Citizens. I’m also excited about  Professor Stephen Friedman’s  The Art of Social Impact Campaigns course. With the help of Professor Friedman, my team is developing our own campaign on gender-based violence, and I’ll have the opportunity to explore issues I’m passionate about in my country of birth, South Africa. How has SIPA affected your life? First and foremost, my SIPA experiences have helped me to refine my personal values, articulate my concerns and hopes, and plan for my personal and professional future. I’ve also learned so much about U.S. politics and society, which I look forward to continuing to explore through the International Fellows Program. While I know I’ve barely scraped the surface, it has been invaluable to reflect on current events with professors with a wealth of knowledge and diverse perspectives, like  Mayor Michael Nutter  and  Professor Christina Greer. Finally, and perhaps most importantly, I’ve developed a strong network of inspiring classmates and generous mentors who will be life-long friends. I am deeply grateful for the community I have at SIPA and already saddened by the prospect of having to say farewell to some of them at the end of this academic year. Is there a particular SIPA experience that stands out? Professor Yumiko Shimabukuro’s Comparative Social Welfare Policy course was transformative. A phenomenally talented, dedicated, and thoughtful teacher, Professor Shimabukuro is invested in the success of her students. I’m looking forward to taking her Urban and Social Policy course in my final semester at SIPA, as she is exactly the teacher I need as I prepare to head back out into the world. What are your plans after SIPA? In the short-term, I hope to be involved in the 2020 U.S. presidential campaign, working for a candidate or on issue-based advocacy. Afterwards, I plan to spend time working in Cape Town or return to the Australian public sector, ideally working on social cohesion or violence prevention programs.

The Ethical Dilemma of Using Drug Stimulants in Children and Adolescents with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) Attention-Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is a neurodevelopmental disorder characterized by inattention and/or hyperactivity and impulsivity. Because of this, ADHD patients fare worse compared to healthy controls in terms of affect, quality of life, and attention. Thus, they are more prone to anxiety, depression, learning-related disorders, poor life productivity, pessimism, and relationship issues (Bueno, Kozasa, da Silva, Alves, Louza, Pompeia, 2015; Ogrim Hestad, 2013). In the US, 6.7% to 12% of children are diagnosed with this disorder. It is more prevalent in boys than in girls (Shier, Reichenbacher,†¦show more content†¦This is in line with my moral obligation as a nurse. In my pursuit of arriving at an ethical resolution, I will reference the bioethical principles of justice and beneficence/nonmaleficence to analyze this predicament. Justice Justice demands that all patients be given equal and fair treatment. In the case of drug stimulants, this is not so. Singh, Filipe, Bard, Bergey, and Baker (2013) claim that in the US, children diagnosed with ADHD do not have equal access to stimulants because ethnic minorities are less likely to receive them than Whites. This disparity is a result of many factors such as social status, stigma and culture. For instance, poor and uninsured children are less likely to be treated for this disorder. In addition, ADHD is still viewed negatively by the public in many parts of the world. Therefore, some chose not to be treated due to fear of rejection. Furthermore, there are certain cultures that do not view children’s behavior as a result of biomedical processes. As a consequence, they do not see drug stimulants as something beneficial to their children. Therefore, considering drug stimulants as a treatment of choice for ADHD that can be adopted in all cultures undermines the import ance of providing culturally and socially sensitive nursing care. To address this ethical issue, Sing et al. (2013) suggest that health practitioners provide ‘ecologically sensitive’ clinical practice. Are children smarter (or more socialized) because of the Internet? In the world today, technology is everywhere, and the Internet is a major part of our lives. Almost everything we do in our daily lives has to do with the computer or some sort of technology in one way or another. Children now a days are starting to use technology at younger age. There are a lot of children with tablets or iPods, which they use daily. So this brings to mind, are children smart or more socialized because of the internet? With children of all ages using the internet on daily basis, are they learning or just using it to socialize with other friends? According to 2005 Pew Research Center report, 87% of 12-17 year olds are online. That is a 24% increase†¦show more content†¦By engaging their brains in more complex tasks at a younger stage in their lives, toddlers are improving cognition and critical review skills, and displaying a more advanced understanding of both virtual and real worlds. There is a whole other side to this question also, that the information on the internet has always been readily available, so what is it about the internet that is making children smarter. If it has always been available and they did not make the effort to use it then, they are not going to use it now. In a way the internet can also be a distraction to children because the social media sites are easily accessible. They say children are not able to retain as much information as before because the internet has such easy access to questions. So students/children are not taking their time and giving thought into their projects. Its so easy to just look up an answer and pop it in, than to give it thought and personal reflection. The go getter Essay The Go-Getter is a story about one mans drive and persistence. William E. Peck is his name and he is an ex-soldier who was injured in battle. Bill lost one of his arms and had one of his legs shortened because of a gunshot wound. But the story begins as the Ricks ; Logging Company is looking for a man who can take over managerial responsibilities in their Shanghai office. The two previous managers have had alcohol problems and have not lived up to their responsibilities. So the company is looking for a replacement. First off, Cappy Ricks and Mr. Skinner are set on a Mr. Andrews taking the job in Shanghai. But in walks this gimpy one-armed man into Mr. Ricks office and wows him with his powerful ability to sell himself, Bill Peck. Bill had met with several other people in the company and they did not give him a chance. But he wouldnt quit and went straight to the top and achieved what he was looking for, and got his chance. Early in Bills job, he does surprisingly well. The top dogs a t the company think that Bill just may be the man to take over the Shanghai office instead of Mr. Andrews. But he would have to pass one test. Cappy sends Bill out to pick up a blue vase and deliver it back to Cappy by a certain time and place. What Bill doesnt know is that Cappy sets obstacles to make the task almost impossible. Bill succeeds in this mission to the surprise of Cappy. Bill is only the second person out of fifteen to actually complete the mission. Bill is ultimately offered the job to take over the Shanghai office. At my internship, my supervisor in working the cameras at WICU has not exemplified the same managerial style and qualities as Cappy Ricks. Hes just not that mean, in the sense of sending me out on a bogus story or on a wild goose chase. But he does have confidence in me to shoot what I think is appropriate. His confidence in me does work, because if he would always shoot a story or scene, then how could I learn. Im not really sure if Im beneficial to the s tation because I am only an intern. But there is a little over a month left, so maybe in time Ill be beneficial to the station. In the interview process of Mr. Peck, he demonstrates a strong will to succeed and wont take no for an answer. Mr. Peck went to see other high management people at the lumber company and got rejected. But he went straight to the top and got what he wanted. He wowed Cappy Ricks with his persistence and his personality. I just hope that Cappy gave Bill the job on account of his interview and personality and not for sympathy and for all his disabilities. For the pursuit of the blue vase Bill demonstrated the same qualities as in the interview. He wouldnt quit and tried everything to fulfill Cappys orders. Being a veteran, Bill was used to taking orders from higher authorities. Just like Bills Brigadier General once said to him, that by any means, it shall be done. And Bill got it done, even though Cappy assumed that he wouldnt be able to get it done. The most important message in The Go-Getter is it doesnt matter what obstacles you have to overcome, the only thing that matters is getting the job done. Bills disabilities signify that anybody can do anything if they put their mind to it and be persistent. If gimpy one-armed William E. Peck can get the job done, then there isnt a person in the world who couldnt do the same. But how he was tested is another story in itself. I agree with the premise that employees should be tested. But the way that Mr. Ricks tests Bill, I think its just down right mean. How are you going to send out a veteran who has had numerous injuries out on a wild goose chase for a damn vase! Plus on top of it you keep on changing the name on the store front, give him wrong directions, and put a cop in front of the store so he cant break in. Maybe its me, but there had to be other ways to test Bill. On the other hand, I think that he proved himself not having any lumber selling experience and did very well for himself. H e didnt need to be tested in my opinion. USS Arizona Memorial Essay December 7th, 1941, was the opening of World War 2, in the Pacific arena. In 1931, Japan invaded Chinas northern parts and then in 1937, Japan announced a full invasion of China. The United States couldnt just stand by and let Japan take over Asias parts, so they moved their fleets to Pearl Harbor. The strongest ships were the battleships, which were named after the states of the union. U.S. Arizona was made in 1915 and then was Rebuilt and updated in 1930. The ship was surrounded with over 8,000 tons of armor plating and had 14 guns that could shoot bullets over 20 miles. Since President Theodore Roosevelt didnt like that idea of just standing around and letting Japan take over Asia, he ordered that the U.S. stop all shipments and deliveries of American oil to Japan. American oil was very important to Japan and so they were upset and had to take charge. The U.S. knew that a surprise attack in Pearl Harbor could happen and they thought they were ready for it. U.S. Commanding officer Hudman E. Kimmel sent out his fleets to exercise and prepare just in case the Japanese decided to plan an attack. On November 26th, 1941, Japan sent 6 aircraft carriers to Hawaii. The U.S. had up to date radars, and anti- cap guns that could help protect Oahu.Wheeler Airforce base watched the skies and if signaled by Wheeler, Hickam Airforce base could attack the Japanese Fleets before they were even ready for the attack. Around 8:50 a.m., the second wave of Japanese crafts pulled into the Harbor. The second wave hit Hickam and Wheeler Army Base again. The smoke from all the explosions gave some cover from the Japanese planes but they soon spotted Nevada, already damaged and barely running, trying to make it to sea.
